Privacy Policy

(last updated September 22, 2025)

Given who we are, the population we serve, and the people we love here at The Blue Canary Project, we are very intentional about data privacy. This means that we are doing what we can to keep everyone’s data safe and maintain compliance with all applicable privacy laws. Here is our Privacy Policy that describes how and why we might access, collect, store, use, and/or share your personal information when you visit our website.

You do not have to share any personal information to access the resources on our website. But you may choose to voluntarily submit certain personal information to us through our website. By visiting this website you accept and agree with our policies and practices under this Privacy Policy. Reading this Privacy Policy will help you understand your privacy rights and choices. If you still have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out at: thebluecanaryproject@proton.me.

INFORMATION WE COLLECT

Personal Information You Share with Us

In Short: We collect personal information that you voluntarily provide to us. “Personal Information” is information that identifies you personally (whether alone or in combination), such as your first and last name, email address, phone number, and postal address.

The personal information that we collect depends on the context of your interactions with us and our website, the choices you make, and the features you use. The personal information we collect may include the following:

  • First and last name

  • Email address

  • Other contact or personal information you choose to provide through our contact form

When you submit information to us via our contact form, this information is also shared with and collected by Squarespace, our online website hosting provider, to enable us to track and respond to your message. This information is shared with Squarespace so that they can provide their website services to us. Please note that, where you choose to voluntarily submit personal information to us, you are solely responsible for providing such information, and you understand that we have not specifically requested you submit such information to us.

Our contact email (thebluecanaryproject@proton.me) is operated via Proton Mail, which is an encrypted email service based in Switzerland. They use end-to-end encryption and zero-access encryption to ensure only you and we can see your emails. This means that not even Proton can view the content of your emails or attachments.

Information Collected Automatically

In Short: Some information – such as your Internet Protocol (IP) address and/or browser and device characteristics – is collected automatically when you visit our site.

This website is hosted by Squarespace. Squarespace automatically collects certain information when you visit, use, or navigate our website, which may include:

  • Characteristics and anonymous usage data about your browser, network, internet service provider, and/or device

  • Referring/exit website pages and URLs

  • Information about how and when you use our website, including: clicks, internal links, webpages visited, scrolling, searches, and date/timestamps

  • Your IP address

This information is primarily needed to properly run this website, to protect and maintain the security and operation of the website, and to help improve Squarespace’s platform and services. Squarespace analyzes the data in a de-personalized form, meaning this information does not reveal your specific identity (like name or contact information).

reCAPTCHA: Squarespace uses reCAPTCHA, which is a 3rd party platform (run by Google), to ensure the security of our site and to protect against spam and abuse. reCAPTCHA works by collecting hardware and software information, and analyzing various data points, such as your device and application data, browsing history, IP address, and user activity on our site (e.g., mouse movements, clicks, and keystrokes), and sending this data to Google for analysis. This data collected is used solely for security purposes and to prevent fraudulent activities. This service operates under Google’s privacy policy which is available here if you want those details.

Cookies: Like many websites, we may also collect information through cookies, web beacons (also known as “tracking pixels”), and similar technologies. A cookie is a small text file that is stored on a visitor’s device, which may be a session ID cookie or tracking cookie. Session cookies make it easier for you to navigate our website and expire when you close your browser. Tracking cookies help in understanding how you use our website, and remain longer. Our website may associate some or all of these types of cookies with your devices. Cookies may remain on your device for extended periods of time.

Web beacons are small graphic images, also known as "internet tags" or "clear gifs," embedded in web pages and email messages. Web beacons may be used to count the number of visitors to our website, to monitor how visitors navigate our website, and to count content views.

See here for more information about the cookies Squarespace uses and here for their cookie policy. Squarespace places two kinds of cookies on visitors’ browsers: (i) necessary cookies so you can navigate and use key features on our website; and (ii) non-essential, or analytics and performance cookies, that collect information about how visitors interact with our website.

HOW WE USE AND SHARE INFORMATION

In Short: We process your information to provide, improve, and administer our website, to communicate with you, for security and fraud prevention, and to comply with applicable laws. We process the personal information for the following purposes below. We may also process your information for other purposes, but only with your prior explicit consent.

Personal Information: In general, the personal information you provide to us is used to help us communicate with you. For example, we may use personal information to contact visitors to our website in response to questions, comments, or requests, to solicit feedback, to provide technical support, to improve our website, or to inform about relevant resources.

We do not sell, trade, rent, or otherwise share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes without your consent. We may share personal information with trusted vendors or partners who are performing or providing services specifically for our website, for example, the providers of the servers for our email communications platform, who may be provided access to your email address to enable us to send email communications to you. These vendors and partners are prohibited from using your personal information except to provide these services for our website, and they are required to maintain the confidentiality of your information.

In the event we undergo some form of business transaction, such as a partnership, your personal information may be among the assets transferred. You acknowledge and consent that such transfers may occur and are permitted by this Privacy Policy, and that any acquirer of our assets may continue to process your personal information as set forth in this Privacy Policy. If our information practices change at any time in the future, we will post such policy changes to our website so that you may opt out of any new information practices. We suggest that you check our website periodically if you are concerned about how your personal information is used.

Non-Personal Information: In general, we use non-identifying data or information to help us improve our website and customize the user experience. This may include aggregating non-personal information to track trends and analyze use patterns on our website. This Privacy Policy does not limit in any way our use or disclosure of non-identifying non-personal information, and we reserve the right to use and disclose such information to our partners, vendors, or other third parties at our discretion.

HOW WE PROTECT INFORMATION

In Short: We aim to protect your personal information through a system of organizational and technical security measures.

We have implemented appropriate and reasonable organizational security measures designed to protect the security of your personal information from unauthorized access. We will retain your personal information only for as long as is necessary for the purposes set out in this Privacy Policy. We further protect your information from potential security breaches by implementing certain technological security measures provided through Squarespace, including encryption, firewalls, and secure socket layer (SSL) protocol. You can see more about the security measures at Squarespace here.

While we strive to take appropriate security measures to protect your personal information, unfortunately no electronic transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. So we cannot promise or guarantee that hackers, cybercriminals, or unauthorized third parties will not be able to defeat our security measures and improperly collect, access, steal, or modify your information. Although we will do our best to protect your personal information, you acknowledge that transmission of personal information to and from our website inherently carries some risk, and you do so at your own risk. You should only access our website within a secure environment.
